About Nintendo

Nintendo is a brand name synonymous with wholesome family video games in 2D and 3D. The Japanese company has sold over 670 million hardware units and over 4 billion in software sales.

Founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi in 1889, the company is named Nintendo, which roughly translates to “leave luck to heaven.” For the first 100 years, the Japanese company focused on playing cards and grew to be the warld’s largest playing card manufacturer. From the 1960s, Nintendo continued to expand to other areas of the toy industry to escape the slowing playing card industry. In 1979, it released its first handheld video game system, named the Game & Watch, which was directed to bullet train commuters. It’s not until 1981 that Nintendo tasted its first success in the toy industry with the release of Donkey Kong, designed by Shigeru Minamoto. All of the company’s efforts culminate in the 1985 release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America which ignites the video game revolution with over 500 million hardware sales. In 1988, Nintendo released the most successful handheld ever with the Game Boy handheld. Over the next two decades, Nintendo would release the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (49.10 million sales), Nintendo 64, GameCube (21.74 million sales), Wii (101.06 million sales), and Wii U (12 million sales).

2016 is shaping up to be a huge transitional year for the company with more Amiibo integration, Nintendo NX console announcement, Wii U blockbuster releases (Zelda Wii U), and Nintendo/DENA mobile game releases (Pokemon mobile game).

How to get the best Nintendo coupons?

Nintendo games are rarely discounted under retail price. The only time to save big is during E3 pre-orders. For the last three years, we have seen Amazon and Best Buy offer 20% to 30% off pre-orders during E3 announcements. Newegg often offers 15% off pre-orders or recently released Nintendo games.

The BNC staff recommends always buying Nintendo consoles bundled with AAA first part titles such as Zelda, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros because those titles are rarely discounted.

Membership discounts

Amazon Prime and Best Buy Gamer club are competing to provide the lowest prices for their members. They provide from $10 to $20 off new releases.
