Founded in 1982 John Warnock and Charles Geschke, the company is named after Adobe Creek, a stream behind the founders’ homes. The logo was designed by John Warnock’s wife and remains the corporate logo. From the beginning, Adobe was a cornerstone of Silicon Valley. The company’s first product, PostScript was a computer language that took John Warnock almost a decade to develop. His work at Xerox PARC further built on his initial language to process the graphics, Design System. The flexible language on created at PARC would enable printing of 3D designs on screen and on paper. As Xerox management turned its back on the Palo Alto initiative, John Warnock and Charles Geschke left Xerox and began Adobe which released PostScript in 1984. The language was adapted for the Apple Macintosh. The company’s second product, TrueType, became the industry standard for reproducing font on screen. Adobe’s partnership with Microsoft in the 1980s was instrumental in beating Apple’s TrueType.

By mid-1980s, Adobe released its first software product, Adobe Illustrator for the Apple Macintosh. It’s not until 1989 and after the company entered the NASDAQ that it released one of the most recognized software programs on the planet, Adobe Photoshop. In 2005, Adobe became the most dominant company in graphic design by buying rival Macromedia.

Today, Adobe has expanded to a cloud subscription model and tablet/smartphone platforms. The use of Adobe’s suite of programs remains the cornerstone for pro tablets such as the Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad Pro.
