Keystroke the Carriers
Posted on April 20th, 2007
The carriers raise your monthly bills, add senseless fees, and sell you ringtones for ludicrous amounts of money. It’s time to save some money and keystroke the carriers (Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile, and Sprint). Voicemail burns up precious minutes each month by making you listen to your message and the digital lady. You can basically skip everything she says simply by using a simple keystroke shortcut. You can save messages, skip messages, check your allocated anytime minutes, and get credits for dropped calls just by dialing a few keys.

1) Skip Voicemail intro: press *
2) Check anytime minutes: dial #646 and Send
3) While listening to a message press: 1 to Rewind, 2 to Pause, 3 to Fast Forward, 4 to Slower, 5 to go Envelope Info (date/time), 6 to go Faster After listening, 4 to Replay, 7 to Delete, 9 to Save, 0 for Help.
4) Check Your Balance: dial #BAL and Send
5) Make A Payment: #PMT and Send
6) Check The Number of Text Messages and kilobyte usage: dial #DATA and Send
7) Contact Customer Service: dial *611 and Send

That’s cool and all, but it’s not really that much of a find other than the Sprint dropped call feature.
Those other features are just shortcuts in the Vmail system and if you really wanted to save money, you would know them already.
Either way, good post, here’s a post linked back to you.

I’m not sure those Cingular shortcuts are correct. But here is one I use:
In voicemail you can skip to the end of a long message by hitting “33″ then you can hit 7 or 9 without waiting for the lady to talk or hit 4 to replay it.

the 646 is really useful, especially if you are traveling and don’t have online access to check your quota. I use it all the time!

With Cingular, to check your remaining data and text messages just dial *3282#

#min on verizon to check minutes used

The T-Mobile info is incorrect. It’s #646#. And at this time, it says it’s offline for maintenance and to try back in 5 hours. Cute.

Cingular has different voicemail systems based on plan and region.
I moved from the sticks to NYC and went back to the old voicemail system we’d just updated from back home.
lame.

@Carlos
Actually you are all right. Depending on what Voicemail service you are on, 7 and 9 may not work until the message is over and the automated system prompts you. If you are on that service, then 77 or 99 work while the actual message is playing. My Voicemale (in Portland, OR) was updated about a year ago so the double digits are no longer necessary, but some are still on the old system and the double digits are required.

the 4272 thing for Cingular doesn’t work. I live in Atlanta, GA, and this sounds like a useful feature, but I cannot figure out how to get it to work.
