HP has finally brought industrial design to the netbook market. Asus and MSI netbooks strike all the right cords but when it comes to design, their products have a Fisher Price look. The HP mini 1000 is thinner and lighter than anything we have tested to date. The keyboard puts this netbook ahead of all the competition. HP chose to integrate a full size keyboard, which is a godsend to touch-typers (finally some real work can be done on netbooks). The compromised keyboards, used by other manufacturers, made typing chore.
The mini has the following inputs: Stereo speakers, single headphone/microphone jack, 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader, Ethernet, 802.11 b/g, and optional Bluetooth. Some people might frown at the omission of a VGA-out but mini isn’t vying to be a desktop replacement. Hp could have omitted their proprietary input to make way for another USB. eSATA is simply fantastic for backing up to an external hard drives, considering the mini does not have an optical like all other netbooks. The mic jack enables anyone to make podcasts anywhere.
Solid state drive or spinning hard drive? We outright recommend buying the mini 1000 with the 16GB SSD. Netbooks must be able to take a few tumbles and spinning hard drive shatter instantly with the smallest shocks. 16GB can hold over any netbook user.
The HP mini 1000 is the result of Hewlett Packard actually listening to their customers and fixing the problems that plagued their 2133 Mini-Note PC. HP kept the full size keyboard and sturdy design construction. It ditch the biggest the slow Via chipset and adopt a lightweight material for the case. Portability became the central focus and the HP mini delivers with a tiny footprints and thin profile. It contains a 3-cell battery, which churns a satisfactory two hours and fifty minutes of battery life (medium usage).
All current generation netbooks use the Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom CPU, which is just enough power to accomplish all the tasks demanded from a netbook (email, web surfing, youtube, word processing, multimedia, and even some five year old games). No performance difference exists among this crop of netbooks. Design, keyboard, and screen should be what you base your purchase on. HP mini offers an excellent glossy 1024×600 pixel display, the best keyboard on the market, and a stunning design.
